A Blessed & Merry Christmas

For this day is born to you a Savior, Who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.  And this shall be a sign unto you: You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger.

Report: Woodlawn Council Leads Procession to St. Peter's Basilica

On Saturday, November 3, 2012, members of the Knights of Columbus Woodlawn Council 2161 Traditional Latin Mass Guild joined pilgrims from all over the world for the International Pilgrimage to Rome to celebrate the fifth anniversary of our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI's apostolic letter, Summorum Pontificum, and to mark the Year of Faith.

In the morning, the pilgrims gathered in the the church of San Salvatore in Lauro, across the Tiber River from the Vatican, for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and silent prayer. After a flyover by jets of the Italian Air Force and Benediction, the pilgrims began their procession to St. Peter's Basilica.

The pilgrims walked through the streets and crossed the Ponte Sant' Angelo, all the while praying the Litany of the Saints in Latin and singing traditional hymns. After passing Castel Sant' Angelo, they processed up the Via della Conciliazione and into St. Peter's Square. As the pilgrims ascended the steps of St. Peter's, the central doors opened and they entered the Basilica.

Still singing, they passed the tomb of St. Peter and the High Altar, and proceeded to the Altar of the Chair for a Traditional Latin Pontifical Mass offered by Cardinal Canizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Woodlawn Council was honored to be asked by the pilgrimage organizers to have our Knights of Columbus flag lead the procession through the streets of Rome to St. Peter's Basilica, flanked by two banners of Our Lady.

Cardinal Canizares Llovera offered the Votive Mass of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Lay people co-responsible for the being and activity of the Church - Pope Benedict XVI

"Co-responsibility requires a change in mentality, particularly with regard to the role of the laity in the Church, who should be considered not as “collaborators” with the clergy, but as persons truly “co-responsible” for the being and activity of the Church... always in cordial communion with the bishops."  Pope Benedict XVI, 24 August 2012, message to the Assembly of the International Catholic Action Forum.

Pope Benedict XVI Commends Knights of Columbus

(Vatican Radio) On Tuesday August 7th the 130th Supreme Convention of the Order of the Knights of Columbus gets underway in Anaheim, California. The Order, founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity, will gather together thousands of its members.  Below are excerpts of the message to the Convention addressed to Supreme Knight Karl A. Anderson on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

"His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI was pleased to learn that from 7 to 9 August 2012 the 130th Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus will be held in Anaheim, California. He has asked me to convey his warm greetings to all in attendance, together with the assurance of his closeness in prayer." ...

"At a time when concerted efforts are being made to redefine and restrict the exercise of the (Catholic faith), the Knights of Columbus have worked tirelessly to help the Catholic community recognize and respond to the unprecedented gravity of these new threats to the Church’s liberty and public moral witness." ...

"The challenges of the present moment are in fact yet another reminder of the decisive importance of the Catholic laity for the advancement of the Church’s mission in today’s rapidly changing social context. The Knights of Columbus, founded as a fraternal society committed to mutual assistance and fidelity to the Church, was a pioneer in the development of the modern lay apostolate. His Holiness is confident that the Supreme Convention will carry on this distinguished legacy by providing sound inspiration, guidance and direction to a new generation of faithful and dedicated Catholic laymen." ...

"Given this urgent need, the Holy Father encourages the Supreme Council, together with each of the local Councils, to reinforce the praiseworthy programs of continuing catechetical and spiritual formation which have long been a hallmark of your Order. Each Knight, in fidelity to his baptismal promises, is pledged to bear daily witness, however quiet and unassuming, to his faith in Christ, his love of the Church and his commitment to the spread of God’s Kingdom in this world." ...

"His Holiness wishes me to convey his profound personal gratitude for the spiritual bouquet of prayers and sacrifices which the Knights and their families have offered for his intentions throughout this year which marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of his episcopal ordination. He is pleased to see in this act of spiritual solidarity not only an outstanding testimony of love for the Successor of Saint Peter, ... but also a sign of especial fidelity, loyalty and support during these difficult times."

"With these sentiments, the Holy Father commends the deliberations of the Supreme Convention to the loving intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church. To all the Knights and their families he cordially imparts his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of joy and peace in the Lord."

Summer Hiatus

The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord
1 July

FORTH let the long procession stream,
And through the streets in order wend;
Let the bright waving line of torches gleam,
The solemn chant ascend;

While we, with tears and sighs profound,
That memorable Blood record
Which, stretched on His hard cross, from many a wound
The dying Jesus poured.

By the first Adam's fatal sin
Came death upon the human race;
In this new Adam doth new life begin,
And everlasting grace.

For scarce the Father heard from heaven
The cry of His expiring Son,
When in that cry our sins were all forgiven,
And boundless pardon won.

Henceforth, whoso in that dear Blood
Washeth shall lose his every stain:
And in immortal roseate beauty robed,
An angel's likeness gain.

Only run thou with courage on
Straight to the goal set in the skies;
He who assists thy course will give thee soon
The everlasting prize.

Father supreme! vouchsafe that we,
For whom Thine only Son was slain,
And whom thy Holy Spirit sanctifies,
May heavenly joys attain.

Amen.
